Reader’s Question:

Hi I’m Ben, 58 years old, from Missouri. I’m about to retire very soon. The thing is I have to get myself another health insurance policy. I understand that it would mean higher premiums, but I don’t want to pay too much needlessly. Would you please give me some tips as to how to go about this?

Ben

St. Louis, MO

There are a lot of people with the same problem as you. Even though you are in perfect shape, your age is one big reason for health insurance companies to charge you with higher premiums. I believe it can go three times as high as what you used to pay when you were employed.

One way to prepare for this is to talk to your employer there in Missouri in advance and ask for an HRA or Health Reimbursement Arrangement. It isn’t in place yet, but it will be in 2010. Through this, you may utilize your unused sick leaves to pay for certain medical and dental expenses, including health care insurance premiums. Look for co-workers who have the same concern. Together, you have a better chance at negotiating this with your employer.

You may also try to enroll at health insurance pools, which are run by state departments. You may find one in Missouri, which the Missouri Department of Insurance supervises. This was created precisely for people who can’t get themselves approved for health insurance coverage. You would, however, need to present proof of this, such as a written letter from an insurer that you would have been rejected or uprated had you applied. This could end up being cheaper. Good luck, Ben.

Reader’s Question:

When I choose an insurance company in Independence, Missouri to buy my health insurance from, what are the factors that I should be looking at?

Tetchie

Independence, MO

Hello, Tetchie, and thank you for this question. It is a very basic issue and one that should be considered by everybody looking for a health insurance plan, whether in Independence, Missouri or Anchorage, Alaska.

Let us begin by reviewing why we ever bothered with health insurance in the first place. The most common and logical reason for getting health insurance is wanting protection against rising health care costs. As such, your health insurance should do just this precisely. When getting health insurance plans, always bear in mind that there are three items most commonly related to health care and these are : hospitalization, professional services, medications and treatments. Hospitalization bills usually are composed of room charges including services linked with confinement such as dextrose costs, meals, and medications while you are in the hospital premises. Professional services are usually the single biggest expense item in health care and this may range from merely monitor consultations (routine visits) to out-patient consultations to surgery (minor or major).

Insurers from Independence, Missouri will vary on the coverage they offer so better look closely at the proposal. The last item you would want to consider maybe rather small in value compared to the two other items mentioned but because this is usually on a sustained mode, it (sometimes) ends up being the most expensive item in health care and I am talking about medicines. I’ve heard of many cases when medication had to be stopped because the person cannot afford the expensive drugs anymore.

Reader’s Question:

Currently our company in Kansas City Missouri MO is looking for a good group health insurance program that can cater our employees, so we’ve made contact with a health insurance agent but we’ve been ask to produce some records about the company, is this ok?

Donald

Kansas City, MO

As much as you want privacy, it is also the same with the health insurance agent. What the health insurance agent in Kansas City Missouri MO was asking was part of the compliances which the agent is trying to prepare for your company. That information is necessary for the agent to create options upon presenting to you the possible course of your company’s health insurance program.

Health insurance companies are very specific when it comes to requirements. They will be asking for public records or corporate records to prove that the entity legally existing. I’m not sure in Kansas City Missouri MO with their minimum requirements, but I’m pretty sure that all states provide guidelines in terms of minimum requirements for a specific size of group.

Any records asked by your health insurance agent in Kansas City Missouri MO is purposely for your insurance program, getting a group health insurance is just like getting a big discounts and some privileges for its group members so the insurance company is just seeking some proofs that the group was not created simply because of the advantages that you can get as a group.

Reader’s Question:

I have been a victim once of a very unsatisfactory service by one of the providers I got from my health insurance policy in Independence MO. I have heard a lot about pay-for-performance, and I am hoping that could help policyholders like me to get better service. How will that affected my health insurance policy though if that’s implemented?

Paul

Independence, MO

Very forward thinking, Hiland.

Although pay-for-performance (P4P) is not yet fully implemented as of this writing, I personally think it will be a worthwhile policy , and might be worth it if it would mean to increase health insurance premiums a little bit. In concept, pay for performance and value based purchasing are terms which refer to health care payment systems which reward medical providers like hospitals and doctors for efficiency in delivering service. Higher quality for a lower cost is the basic thrust for this policy as a way of protecting health insurance policyholders.

The federal government in MO is trying to reform health care and in this context, P4P is already begin implemented in Medicare program, although at this rate we cannot tell yet if P4P is more beneficial than not for most health insurance policyholders.

For me, our current healthcare system is not very favorable for health insurance policyholders as providers are being paid for every service rendered or performed. I’ve noticed health care providers sacrifice quality for quantity with our current system since it will be at the providers’ advantage to perform as many services as possible. Another issue being addressed by P4P is to encourage preventive healthcare. Our current system does not encourage health care providers to prevent other complications since they get to receive more money for more treatment needs by health insurance policyholders. For most insurance policyholders, I think if P4P will be fully implemented will surely help contain healthcare costs and can minimize waster for most consumers.

Missouri Student Life Insurance

Reader’s Question:

I am a 24-year old student in dental medicine and I am still single. Is there such thing as a student life insurance policy in Missouri? I am hoping I can find one that is cheaper than the regular type of life insurance policy.

Gene

Columbia, MO

You have such great thinking, Gene.

I am very much impressed by your initiative to insure yourself even if you’re still single and still in school. For students like you, there are a bunch of life insurance policies out there that offer cheap student life insurance quotes. Some life insurance policies even give you free life insurance when you sign up while still a student. You will pay them a year after you graduation if you plan to stick with the same life insurance company.

Too good to be true, isn’t it? It is just one of the marketing strategies of most insurance companies in Missouri who understand the special needs of students like you. Who pays for your insurance then before graduation? Apparently it is subsidized by other existing policyholders. You can shop around from the internet of such benefits.

Most students in Missouri like you who are still single without any qualified dependents simply need a 10-year term life insurance policy. It is not only a cheap life insurance policy for you, it is also very simple and easy to understand. Although a term life insurance policy expires after a specific term or period of time, you can always renew. Just be sure you get a term student life insurance policy that is guaranteed not to increase premiums with renewable terms. Remember always that there is not really an age too early for individuals to consider purchasing any type of life insurance.
